Synopsis
If there are so many benefits to adopting the "embrace
uncertainty" credo, why don't people do it more often?
This chapter addresses the powerful forces that make it difficult
or socially unacceptable to embrace uncertainty. In countless
ways society's myths, institutions, and culture tell people
that order is good and chaos is bad. The desire
for efficiency, for preserving the peace and for maintaining
control are so strong that often people get closure for the
sake of closure and answers because they need answers. Any
of these in moderation can be beneficial, but when there are
no counterbalancing forces, people get a kind of certainty
that often has little relationship to the real forces and
trends at work.
