Chapter 4: How is the Illusion of Certainty Created?

Synopsis
People and organizations spend a lot of time creating the appearance, but not the reality, of certainty. Tools and activities such as over-emphasizing planning processes, over-emphasizing formality in presentations, enforcing inappropriate deadlines, and improperly using experts, often create an impression of certainty that is actually a mirage. This is problematic, as they obscure critical relationships and can blind the organization to opportunities and dangers. Managers may become less open to input from others and blind to new information that might alter or change their plans.
